In a major development for Nigerian football, the Bureau of the FIFA Council has approved the appointment of a Normalisation Committee to manage the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), pending the conduct of fresh elections into the federation’s Executive Committee.
The decision, announced in a letter signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and addressed to Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme MON, marks a significant intervention in the administration of Nigerian football and sets the stage for a transition towards a new NFF leadership.
Under the approved arrangement, the Normalisation Committee will be responsible for managing the affairs of the federation until its assigned responsibilities are completed, with FIFA stipulating that its mandate must expire no later than May 31, 2027.
According to the letter, the committee “shall consist of a suitable number of members, who will be appointed jointly by FIFA and CAF as soon as possible.”
The joint appointment process by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to determine the composition of the committee that will oversee the transition and guide the federation towards fresh elections.
In a particularly significant provision, FIFA has made it clear that members of the Normalisation Committee will not be eligible to contest for any of the positions to be filled during the forthcoming NFF elections.
The letter states that none of the committee members “will be eligible for the positions to be filled during the upcoming NFF elections under any circumstances.”
The restriction underscores the separation between the responsibility of administering the federation during the normalisation period and the opportunity to seek elective office in the new NFF Executive Committee.
Pending the appointment of the Normalisation Committee, the NFF Secretariat will continue to oversee the day-to-day running of the federation and the administration of football in Nigeria.
This interim arrangement means that the federation’s administrative machinery will remain operational while FIFA and CAF work towards constituting the committee.
The letter confirms that the Secretariat will maintain its existing responsibilities until the Normalisation Committee is appointed, providing continuity in the administration of the country's football activities during the transition.
The approval of the Normalisation Committee places the forthcoming NFF elections at the centre of the next phase of Nigerian football governance.
With the committee expected to manage the federation's affairs until its assigned tasks are completed, the process will ultimately lead towards the emergence of a new NFF Executive Committee.
However, FIFA and CAF are yet to announce the names of the individuals who will constitute the Normalisation Committee, with the appointment expected to take place as soon as possible.
The committee's precise composition, operational arrangements and timetable for completing its responsibilities are also subject to further official communication.
FIFA's decision represents a major development in the governance of football in Nigeria, with the coming months expected to be crucial to the federation's administrative direction and preparations for fresh elections.
The Normalisation Committee will operate within the mandate established by FIFA, with May 31, 2027, serving as the latest permissible deadline for completing its assigned responsibilities.
For now, attention turns to the joint appointment process by FIFA and CAF, while the NFF Secretariat continues its daily administrative duties.
Further details concerning the composition of the committee and the next steps in the transition are expected to emerge through official communications from the relevant authorities.
Nigeria football now enters a new chapter, with FIFA's approved normalisation process setting the course towards fresh leadership at the Nigeria Football Federation.
