As the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship gets underway on Saturday, July 11, in Calabar, Cross River State, one club has made its ambition crystal clear.
Ghetto Tigers Ladies are not travelling to Calabar merely to participate, they are determined to secure one of the two coveted promotion tickets to the NWFL Premiership.
Club Manager Azeez Mustapha expressed confidence ahead of the tournament, insisting that promotion is long overdue for the Lagos-based side.
"The only ambition the club harbors is the promotion ticket because we believe it is long overdue," Mustapha declared.
Despite boasting a relatively young squad, Ghetto Tigers believe experience will be one of their biggest assets during the championship.
According to Mustapha, many of the players have already featured in two previous NWFL Championship tournaments, giving them valuable experience in handling the pressure of promotion football.
"The strength of this team is the maturity of our young squad. They have competed together in the last two championships and understand what it takes."
That continuity has helped build a strong understanding among the players, something the manager believes could make the difference in Calabar.
While other clubs may boast bigger names or stronger financial backing, Mustapha believes Ghetto Tigers possess something equally important unity.
He described the bond within the squad as one of the team's greatest strengths.
"The synergy and bond of the team will stand us out among the others. These young girls understand each other so much."
The manager believes teamwork, discipline and togetherness will be vital in a tournament where every match could determine promotion.
Like many privately owned football clubs in Nigeria, Ghetto Tigers have had to battle financial and logistical challenges.
Mustapha admitted that logistics remain one of the club's biggest obstacles but revealed that careful planning has helped ease the burden ahead of the championship.
"Logistics have always been a challenge for privately owned clubs, and our case is no different. But we anticipated it and prepared our budget for this period, which has prevented it from becoming a major setback."
His comments reflect the realities faced by many clubs outside government ownership, where effective planning often determines competitiveness.
Having competed in the last two editions of the championship, Mustapha believes this current squad is the strongest the club has assembled.
"I strongly believe this present crop of players has both the ability and the determination to win promotion."
Drawing inspiration from the club's memorable run to the Lagos FA Cup final, he revealed the motivational message he has shared with his players.
"If you want the ticket, then play like you want it. You will get it."
While acknowledging that some clubs may enter the tournament as favourites, Mustapha insists that desire and determination will ultimately decide who earns promotion.
"There are favourites, no doubt. But I believe the teams that want promotion the most will be the ones celebrating in the end. Ability and potential alone won't be enough."
With only two promotion tickets available among 16 competing clubs, every point and every performance will be crucial.
The manager reserved heartfelt appreciation for the club's supporters, describing them as an essential part of Ghetto Tigers' journey.
"We are nothing without our fans, and we never take their support for granted."
He assured supporters that the players and technical crew would give everything possible to achieve promotion.
"We will do everything humanly possible to bring home the promotion ticket."
Drawn in Group D alongside Imo Striker Queens, Kwara Ladies, and Chosen Generation Angels, Ghetto Tigers face a difficult path to promotion.
However, confidence within the camp remains high.
With experience, unity, and a clear objective driving the team, Ghetto Tigers believe this could finally be the year they secure a long-awaited place in the NWFL Premiership.
As the championship kicks off in Calabar, the Tigers know that words alone will not be enough.
Now, they must prove on the pitch that they truly deserve promotion.
