NWFL Clubs Enter Survival Mode as Mid-Season Transfer Window Opens

The Nigeria Women Football League has officially opened its mid-season transfer window, giving Premiership clubs a narrow but decisive opportunity to reshape their squads ahead of the business end of the 2025/26 season.

The window runs from February 25 to March 4, a critical nine-day period that could define promotion dreams, title ambitions, and relegation battles across both groups of the league.

At the conclusion of the first round on Matchday Nine, Bayelsa Queens emerged as Group A leaders, while FC Robo Queens topped Group B, underlining their early-season consistency and title credentials.

However, with the season finely poised, league positions remain far from secure.

The stakes could not be higher. Only the top three teams from each group will qualify for the prestigious Super Six, where the league title and continental places are decided. At the opposite end, 5 teams will be relegated at the end of the regular season, a reality that has intensified urgency in the transfer market.

Clubs hovering around the qualification line are expected to make targeted signings, particularly in key areas such as attack and defence, while teams battling relegation are under pressure to recruit players who can deliver immediate impact.

With limited time and no room for error, the mid-season window offers little margin for experimentation. Recruitment decisions made in the coming days could either stabilize faltering campaigns or derail promising ones.

Several clubs are already believed to be monitoring domestic standouts and free agents, as coaches and technical crews scramble to fix weaknesses exposed during the first round.

The NWFL Premiership will resume on March 11, marking the start of a decisive second round where form, depth, and squad balance will be tested to the limit.

As the countdown to kickoff begins, one thing is clear: what clubs do in this transfer window may ultimately decide who lifts the trophy, who reaches the Super Six, and who drops out of the Premiership entirely.
