Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, are now just one hurdle away from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after sealing a composed 2–1 away victory over Senegal to progress 3–1 on aggregate.
Playing under pressure in Theis on Saturday evening, the Falconets delivered a mature and disciplined performance to eliminate their Senegalese hosts and book a place in the final round of the African qualifiers, where Malawi now stand between Nigeria and Poland.
Nigeria wasted no time in asserting control. With Senegal needing to overturn a 1–0 first-leg deficit, the Falconets struck first and silenced the home crowd.
Kindness Chinaza Ifeanyi opened the scoring in the 19th minute, finishing a header calmly from a corner kick to extend Nigeria’s aggregate lead and immediately shift the momentum firmly in favour of the visitors.
The early goal forced Senegal into a desperate chase, leaving spaces that Nigeria exploited with composure and tactical intelligence.
The Falconets showed maturity beyond their years. Rather than panic, they slowed the tempo, absorbed pressure, and waited for the right moment to strike.
That moment came in the 68th minute, when Precious Oscar found the net to make it a two goal lead, another headed goal from corner kick Nigeria’s lead on the night and effectively kill the tie.
The Senegalese pull one back from a thunderbolt long range shot but the lone goal was not enough.
At 3–1 on aggregate, the goal drained belief from the hosts and underlined Nigeria’s dominance across both legs.
The victory was even more impressive considering Nigeria were without injured top scorer Janet Akekoromowei, whose absence raised concerns ahead of the match.
However, the Falconets responded with collective effort, tactical discipline, and confidence proving once again that the strength of the team goes beyond individual brilliance.
The midfield controlled possession intelligently, the defence stayed compact under pressure, and the attack remained clinical when chances came.
With Senegal now out of the way, Nigeria advance to face Malawi in the final qualifying round, with a coveted ticket to the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 at stake.
The Falconets are now 180 minutes away from the global stage, and momentum appears firmly on their side.
For a team with a proud history at youth World Cups, the dream is alive and Poland is now within touching distance.
