NWFL Premiership Matchday 1 Standouts: The Three Stars Who Lit Up the Opening Weekend

Matchday One of the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership kicked off with excitement across nine centres on Wednesday 26 of November, producing goals, drama, comebacks, and standout individual displays. While several players delivered strong performances, three names rose above the rest with impact that shaped their teams’ results: Akosile Mary, Marvellous Oladunni, and Hembafan Ayatsea.

Below is a closer look at the trio who earned widespread praise after the league’s opening round.

Akosile Mary (Confluence Queens) – The Equaliser That Sparked a Comeback

In Iyamho, Confluence Queens needed something special to avoid starting the season with a defeat and Akosile Mary delivered exactly that. Her composed finish in the 45th minute brought her side level at 1–1 against Abia Angels, shifting momentum at a crucial time.

Mary’s goal didn’t just restore balance; it sparked the belief that eventually led to a 2–2 draw in a match that could have easily slipped away. Beyond the goal, her Attack presence, ball recovery, and control in transition stood out. She was the heartbeat of Confluence Queens and one of the most influential players on the pitch. She also provide the second goals asisst for her club.

Marvellous Oladunni (FC Robo Queens) – The Winning Goal That Silenced Akure

In Akure, FC Robo Queens claimed one of the toughest away victories of Matchday 1 thanks to the brilliance of Marvellous Oladunni.

Just before halftime, the defensive midfielder received the ball with confidence, kept her composure, and fired home the only goal of the match, a strike that secured a crucial 0–1 win over Sunshine Queens.

Oladunni’s movement, pressing, and tackles and ability to get her team back in possession of the ball troubled Sunshine all through the first half. Her goal has already put her on the early scorers’ list of the season, and more importantly, gave FC Robo the perfect start on the road.

Hembafan Ayatsea (Nasarawa Amazons) – The Decisive Blow in Lafia

Nasarawa Amazons began the season with a comeback win, and the decisive strike came from Hembafan Ayatsea.

After Shobowale equalised in the 40th minute, Ayatsea completed the turnaround just before halftime, slotting home the 45th-minute winner in their 2–1 victory over Delta Queens.

Her attacking intelligence shone through good positioning, sharp reactions, and the confidence to finish under pressure. The Lafia crowd roared as she gave the Amazons the lead, and her contribution proved the difference in a closely contested battle.
