Women's football in Nigeria is set for one of its most intense and unforgiving seasons yet as the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) concluded its 2025 Annual General Assembly (AGA) in Port Harcourt with a landmark decision that has already sparked shockwaves across the domestic football scene.
In a bold move aimed at raising competitive standards and strengthening the league structure, the NWFL confirmed that the 2025/2026 Premiership season will witness six teams relegated, the highest ever in a single campaign. This unprecedented format has thrown clubs into high alert, knowing that the margin for error has narrowed drastically.
The season will officially kick off November 26, 2025 and run until April 22, 2026. Teams will play four match weeks before going on a brief Christmas break, returning to action on January 7, 2026. With 20 clubs in the top flight divided into two groups, every fixture will carry extra weight as clubs battle not just for glory, but for survival.
In line with the league’s development goals, two teams will earn promotion from the NWFL Championship while two will drop into the Nationwide League. However, the headline decision remains the dramatic relegation of six teams, a move intended to refine league competitiveness and elevate the standard on and off the pitch.
The NWFL reaffirmed that clubs must adhere to the 15–17 years age eligibility rule, limiting the registration of underaged players to three per club. This reinforces the league’s long-term ambition to produce elite youth talent capable of dominating in Africa and beyond.
Financial transparency also took center stage, with clubs now mandated to submit annual financial reports at the end of the season, part of a long-term strategy to align women’s football governance with global best practices.
The league also confirmed that online registration for the season will open November 14, 2025 and automatically close on November 22, 2025. Ahead of the portal launch, clubs will receive guided video tutorials to ensure smooth compliance.
Week One fixtures promise immediate fireworks, with big-name clashes across both groups:
Group A
Bayelsa Queens ๐ Edo Queens
Adamawa Queens ๐ Pacesetter Queens
Heartland Queens ๐ Ekiti Queens
Naija Ratels ๐ Ibom Angels
Castmog Ladies ๐ Rivers Angels
Group B
Nasarawa Amazons ๐ Delta Queens
Confluence Queens ๐ Abia Angels
Sunshine Queens ๐ FC Robo Queens
Ahudiyannem Queens ๐ Remo Stars Ladies
Dannaz Ladies ๐ Osun Babes
With six clubs destined to drop, the NWFL has drawn a line in the sand, only the strongest, most organized, and most disciplined teams will survive. The message is clear:
Prepare, compete, or get swept aside.
Women’s football in Nigeria continues to evolve rapidly, and the coming season promises drama, growth, and fierce battles from Matchday One to the final whistle in April.
Brace up.
This is not just a league, it’s survival.
