NWFL Championship: Unification FC Focused on Growth — Oyekan Oluwatobi

Unification FC are setting their sights on more than just competing in the upcoming 2025 NWFL Championship. According to the club’s Chairman and Director, Oyekan Oluwatobi, the Lagos-based side is building for the long term with a mission that goes beyond immediate results.

Our projection is to enhance raw talent and contend at the top tier of Nigerian women’s football league and cup competitions,” Oyekan said.

For him, Unification FC’s uniqueness lies in its dynamism, a factor he believes sets the club apart from other competitors in the league.

The team has been busy with a series of preseason activities, including Grade A friendlies against elite NWFL sides and the FEFCAN Open Preseason Tournament. Unlike clubs that concentrate on specific areas, Unification FC have been working to achieve balance across all departments.

In terms of our style of play, we have a traditional approach we call the ‘U-Theory’, which we intend to adopt this season,” Oyekan explained.

Like many privately run clubs in Nigeria, Unification FC face their fair share of obstacles. “Major challenge would have to be attributed to finance,” he admitted. Despite that, the club’s focus remains strong.

Oyekan highlighted the club’s player-centered approach, saying:

> “It’s a case of different strokes for different folks. Players have different needs, desires, and opinions, so we adopt this logic and address them accordingly.”

While many clubs focus only on promotion, Unification FC are taking a broader view.

All the options are possible for a willing mind. Promotion, player development, and stability are part of our plan. We are hoping for the best at the end of the season,” he said with optimism.

Unification FC also value the importance of their supporters.

The fans are a branch we can’t undermine. Keeping them engaged has been through our good football display, giveaways, and a fans’ community channel that captures both online and offline events,” Oyekan revealed.

Ahead of the kickoff, his message to fans is clear:

> “I want them to keep supporting us and be rest assured of a decent display.”

Importance of the NWFL Championship

For Oyekan, the NWFL Championship is not just a competition but a bridge between grassroots and elite women’s football. “It’s an important pathway and can’t be undermined. It creates a platform for raw talent to rise to the top,” he emphasized.

He also called on the league organizers and NFF to step up support:

Grants or aid won’t be a bad idea, and seminars or workshops for coaches, managers, and media officers would also go a long way in improving the league.”

Reacting to the recent virtual draw, Oyekan praised the innovation:

The virtual draw was another welcome development as it enhances team preparation in terms of accommodation, transportation, and logistics.”

When asked about the group opponents, he was quick to downplay any fears:

Regardless of the outcome of the draws, I see no changes; all I see are group matches that should be electrifying if all goes well.”

In closing, Oyekan stressed that Unification FC are not just competing but laying a foundation for the future:

> “We’re building, not just competing. Our vision is to nurture, contend, transfer, and do football business as normal, not as usual.”

As the 2025 NWFL Championship edges closer, Unification FC will be one of the teams to watch, not only for their performances on the pitch but also for the long-term project they are building for Nigerian women’s football.
