The opening game of the season did not go as planned for Osun Babes, who suffered a tough 2-1 defeat against IMO Strikers in their bid to return to the top flight. But instead of putting all the blame on his players, head coach Wale Animashaun has raised eyebrows by pointing to the match ball and playing conditions as a key factor behind the loss.
After the match, Coach Animashaun admitted his team was disappointed but quickly highlighted unusual circumstances surrounding the game:
> “Now we need to go back and plan for the remaining matches. Anything can happen in football, but honestly, the size of the ball today was not the one we normally use.”
According to him, were handed a ball that felt different from the one they trained with.
> “Maybe because they are playing on the turf for the first time, I don’t know. Maybe the size of the ball, I don’t know. But we believe we will come back. In the NNL, when they want to use a certain ball, they give it to the teams ahead of time so they can get familiar. But today, we just got to the pitch and the ball was different.”
While some fans may see this as the coach making excuses for his team’s defeat, others believe he has a valid point. Standard match balls are expected to be consistent across competitions, and any variation in size, weight, or feel could affect performance, especially for players to use a good playable surfaces.
Still, critics argue that the ball is the same for both teams, and IMO Strikers managed to adapt better on the day.
Despite the controversy, Coach Animashaun insists that his team is not out of the race:
> “Anything can change at any time. God holds victory, so any team can beat another. I strongly believe we can still come up and win the group.”
The coach remains optimistic that Osun Babes will bounce back, adapt quickly, and challenge for promotion despite the opening setback.
The big question now is: should a different match ball really be blamed for Osun Babes’ loss? Or is this just a case of poor preparation and execution on the pitch?
Whatever the answer, one thing is certain, this debate has already sparked strong opinions among football fans.
The journey to promotion continues, but the controversy around this defeat is sure to linger long after the final whistle.
