The Super Falcons of Nigeria have once again stamped their authority as the queens of African football, securing their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in a thrilling display of resilience, unity, and skill. This latest triumph, dubbed "Mission X", marks a decade of dominance and cements Nigeria’s reputation as a continental powerhouse in women’s football.
At the 2025 WAFCON hosted in Morocco, the Super Falcons overcame every hurdle thrown their way, from tight group stage fixtures to nerve-wracking knockout matches, proving that their spirit remains unbreakable. The final was nothing short of electric as Nigeria edged past their North African opponents in a fiercely contested showdown that left fans on the edge of their seats.
The road to the championship was not easy. With growing competition from the likes of South Africa, Morocco, and Zambia, the Super Falcons had to be at their very best. They began the tournament cautiously but picked up momentum, displaying experience, tactical discipline, and attacking flair.
Star forward Asisat Oshoala, once again proved why she’s regarded as one of Africa’s finest, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made crucial saves throughout the tournament. The midfield duo of Toni Payne and Rasheedat Ajibade kept things ticking in the engine room, providing creativity and cover.
For the team and millions of Nigerians, this victory was more than just a title, it was about reclaiming pride and restoring confidence after falling short in the last WAFCON edition. The team’s motto throughout the tournament was “Mission X”, a clear statement of intent to win their 10th title and silence doubters.
Coach Madugu, who faced criticism, deserves credit for steadying the ship and bringing tactical maturity to the team. His player selections, formations, and in-game decisions were key to Nigeria’s success in Morocco.
Amidst the celebrations, reports emerged that Morocco filed a petition questioning the eligibility of one of Nigeria's players. However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reviewed the complaint and cleared Nigeria of any wrongdoing, validating the Falcons' clean victory.
This WAFCON victory is a massive boost not just for the team, but for Nigerian women’s football as a whole. It’s a clear signal that with the right support, funding, and development programs, Nigeria can continue to produce world-class talent and dominate both on the continent and globally.
It also raises hopes for the upcoming Olympic Games and World Cup qualifiers, where the Super Falcons will aim to go beyond African success and make a strong global impact.
Back home, celebrations erupted in major cities across Nigeria. From Lagos to Abuja, Kano to Port Harcourt, fans hailed the team’s achievement, chanting “Mission X Complete!” across social media and local viewing centers.
President Bola Tinubu congratulated the team, promising increased investment in women’s sports, while the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) hinted at plans for a national reception and reward package for the history-making squad.
